How to Apply for Government Jobs

A complete step-by-step guide — from finding the vacancy to checking your result

💡

Applying for a government job involves several steps spread across weeks or months. Missing even one step — like paying a fee within the deadline or uploading the wrong photo format — can get your application rejected. This guide walks you through every step clearly.

01

🔍 Find the Right Job

Start on the Latest Government Jobs page. Use the filters to narrow listings by:

  • Qualification — 10th Pass, 12th Pass, ITI, Diploma, Graduate, etc.
  • State — your home state or nearby states
  • Department — SSC, Railway, Banking, Police, Defence, Teaching, PSU
  • Age — ensure the upper age limit is within your range (check relaxation for OBC/SC/ST/PwD)

Set up Job Alerts so matching new vacancies are emailed to you automatically.

02

Check Your Eligibility

Before investing time in an application, confirm you meet all eligibility criteria:

  • Age limit — minimum and maximum age as of the cut-off date in the notification
  • Educational qualification — percentage, degree type, subjects, recognition of your board/university
  • Nationality — most central government posts require Indian citizenship
  • Category — OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD relaxations vary by post

Use the AI Eligibility Checker for a quick automated check, and always read the official notification PDF for complete eligibility conditions.

03

📄 Gather Required Documents

Prepare the following before starting your application. Requirements vary — always check the official notification:

Identity & Age Proof Aadhaar Card, PAN, Voter ID, Passport, Birth Certificate, 10th Marksheet (for DOB)
Educational Documents All marksheets (10th, 12th, Degree), Provisional/Final Degree Certificate, Migration Certificate
Category Certificates OBC Non-Creamy Layer, SC/ST Caste Certificate, EWS Income & Asset Certificate, PwD Certificate
Photo & Signature Recent passport-size photo (white background, specific KB/dimensions as required), scanned signature

Tip: Scan all documents at 200–300 DPI and save as PDF/JPG. Check the notification for exact file size and dimension requirements before uploading.

04

🖊 Fill the Application Form

Most government recruitment applications are submitted through the official recruitment board's portal (e.g., ssc.gov.in, rrbapply.gov.in, ibps.in). Steps typically include:

  1. Register — create an account on the official portal using your mobile number and email
  2. Fill personal details — name (as per 10th certificate), date of birth, category, address
  3. Fill educational details — board/university, year of passing, percentage
  4. Upload documents — photo, signature, and other certificates in specified formats
  5. Review carefully — check all entries before proceeding; most forms cannot be edited after submission
  6. Submit — note your Application/Registration Number for future reference

Tip: Never use browser autofill for government forms — it can enter incorrect values in wrong fields. Type details manually.

05

💳 Pay the Application Fee

Most government jobs have an application fee. Common fee structures:

  • General/OBC/EWS: ₹100 – ₹500 depending on the post
  • SC/ST/PwD/Women: Often exempted (check the notification)
  • Ex-Servicemen: Often exempted

Payment modes accepted:

  • UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm)
  • Net Banking
  • Debit / Credit Card
  • Bank Challan (offline payment at SBI / post office — available for some exams)

Always save the fee payment receipt / transaction ID. Take a screenshot of the confirmation page.

06

🪪 Download and Save Your Admit Card

Admit cards (Hall Tickets) are released 1–3 weeks before the examination date. Download it from the official recruitment portal using your Registration Number and Date of Birth.

Monitor the Admit Cards section on AiExamRadar for release alerts, or set up a Job Alert for your specific exam.

  • Print 2–3 copies and keep them in a safe place
  • Carry a valid photo ID (Aadhaar/PAN/Passport) along with the admit card on exam day
  • Check the admit card carefully — exam center, date, time, reporting time, instructions
  • Some exams also require a recent passport-size photo to be pasted on the admit card
07

📚 Prepare for the Exam

08

🏆 Check Your Result

Results are declared on the official recruitment board website. Check AiExamRadar's Results section for quick links and notifications.

After the result:

  • Shortlisted? — Download the merit list and prepare for the next round (skill test, physical test, document verification, or interview)
  • Not shortlisted? — Check the official cutoff list. If you're close to the cutoff, consider filing an RTI or challenging any paper errors through the official grievance portal
  • Keep applying — Government job selection often takes 6–18 months and multiple attempts. Use the Job Alerts to stay updated on new vacancies

Use the Cutoff Predictor to assess your chances and the Salary Calculator to understand your expected take-home if selected.
