All important reasoning topics for IBPS PO Prelims and Mains with tricks, patterns and 200+ practice questions.
IBPS PO Reasoning — Complete Shortcut Guide
1. Syllogism (5 marks in Prelims)
Use Venn Diagrams method for accuracy:
- All A are B → A circle inside B circle
- No A is B → A and B circles separate (no overlap)
- Some A are B → A and B circles partially overlapping
- Some A are not B → Part of A outside B
Shortcut: For "possibility" questions, draw maximum 3 diagrams to cover all cases.
2. Puzzles and Seating Arrangement (15–20 marks in Mains)
Types frequently asked:
- Linear arrangement (single/double row)
- Circular arrangement (facing centre / outside)
- Floor-based puzzles
- Month/Date-based scheduling
- Box puzzles with multiple attributes
Strategy: Identify definite clues first, then relative clues. In linear arrangements, start with the ends.
3. Blood Relations (3–5 marks)
- Always draw a family tree before solving
- Use M (Male) and F (Female) notation
- Coded blood relations: treat the symbols as directional indicators
4. Coding-Decoding (5 marks)
- Letter coding: find the pattern (shift +1, +2, reverse alphabet, etc.)
- Number coding: identify arithmetic relationship between letters and numbers
- New pattern (word-based): analyze multiple coded words to find the code for each word
5. Inequality (5 marks — easiest topic)
Direct: A > B = C > D — follow the chain
Coded: convert symbols to standard inequality, then solve
Rule: If the chain breaks (a > b, b < c), we cannot determine the relationship between a and c — answer is "either I or II" only when both could be true.
