SBI PO English Language — Complete Notes

1. Reading Comprehension (RC)

RC carries the highest marks in the English section (10–15 marks in Prelims, 15–20 in Mains).

  • Approach: Read the questions first, then read the passage with those in mind
  • Inference questions: The answer is implied, not directly stated — think about what the author suggests
  • Vocabulary in context: Choose the meaning that fits the passage tone, not dictionary definition
  • Tone questions: Note words like "however", "despite", "whereas" — they signal contrast

2. Error Detection

Common error types tested in SBI PO:

  • Subject-Verb Agreement: "Each of the students is (not are) present"
  • Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement: "Neither of the boys finished his (not their) homework"
  • Misplaced modifier: Keep the modifier next to the word it modifies
  • Article usage: "a" before consonant sounds, "an" before vowel sounds
  • Preposition: "Married to" (not with); "Sympathize with" (not to)

3. Para Jumbles

  • Identify the opening sentence: usually introduces a topic, has no pronoun reference to an unclear antecedent
  • Identify the closing sentence: usually contains concluding words like "thus", "therefore", "finally"
  • Look for pronoun references: "it", "this", "he" — they follow sentences with their antecedent
  • Use connector words: "however", "moreover", "in addition", "on the other hand"

4. Cloze Test Tips

  • Read the entire passage first to understand context and tone
  • Eliminate options that are grammatically incorrect
  • Among remaining options, pick the one that fits the passage's contextual meaning
  • Be careful of prepositions: "depend on", "consists of", "based on", etc.
